Letter from Fr.Walin
Haiti Ministry Report
We recently received a heartwarming letter from Fr. Walin letting us know about the progress and changes that are going on at St. Matthias School in Thomonde. He started his letter with this paraphrased statement: "We are bound together in God's work, but unfortunately our daily challenges and our distance do not allow us to communicate as often as we should."
As you will remember since the earthquake in Port-au-Prince in January 2010 construction on the school has been delayed by a number of issues. First it was necessary to have a structural assessment of the partially completed building to determine what would be needed to make it safe and sound. This resulted in a number of recommended reinforcements requiring a lot of construction materials. These have proved to be very expensive as well as very difficult to purchase with the tremendous demand in Port-au-Prince. After receiving the $7500 we were able to send immediately following the earthquake, Fr. Walin determined that clean drinking water was a priority for the school children especially with the threat of cholera. Digging a well is very challenging the slow. He reports it is close to being completed.
Many children arrived from Port-au-Prince. This increased the enrollment in St. Matthias and the need for food to feed the children. He reports with the help of the money we sent he was able to get a feeding program at the school started along with help from World Food Program. He says, "Now you will be surprised to see how these kids look." It truly is amazing the difference one meal a day can make in the way children look and the energy they have to learn. The availability of clean water will increase the health of these young students.
Look ahead there is still much construction needed on the school. With the need for metal sheets, lumber, nails, transportation and labor. Fr. Walin goes on to say he is sorry for overwhelming us with so many details and requests we visit the school to evaluate how the money is spent and used... "I think that is a very positive point in partnership." He sends "God's richest blessings upon each of you."
The Haiti Team is considering possibilities for a group from St. James to visit St. Matthias, meet the students and see the progress at the school. We will be inviting members from other churches within the Diocese. If you are interested in more information about this opportunity check with Fr. Bill or others on the Haiti Team.
